Frank van Harmelen new member of the Academia Europaea

He will be part of a select group of researchers who have all been chosen based on their research achievements.

Prof. Frank van Harmelen has been admitted as member of the prestigious association of leading European scientists Academia Europaea (the Academy of Europe). Van Harmelen is Professor of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning in the Department of Computer Science at VU University Amsterdam. He leads the Knowledge Representation and Reasoning group. Van Harmelen was one of the co-designers of the OWL Web Ontology Language Language. He is Director of the Network Institute at the VU, a collaborative research institute between researchers in Computer Science, the Humanities, the Social Sciences, Mathematics, Economics, Law, Philosophy and Theology.

The Academia Europaea has around 3000 members. They are leading experts from the Physical Sciences and Technology, Biological Sciences and Medicine, Mathematics, the Letters and Humanities, Social and Cognitive Sciences, Economics and the Law. Invitations are made after peer group nomination, scrutiny and confirmation as to the scholarship and eminence of the individual in their chosen field. Membership is intended for the top 5% researchers in each field.
