Vacancy: Action-Based Research on History

The Network Institute is looking for staff members (postdoctoral level included) interested in undertaking the tasks below 32 hours per week, over 15 months.

The NWO prefers hiring someone for the project who is already employed at the VU. So for now this is more of an informal check to see if there is someone who fits the profile. For more information you can get in touch with Norah by email.

Tasks:

  • Organizing and networking:
    • Plan and organize opening and closing network events together with project leader, partners, and student-assistant (0.2-0.4 fte)
  • Bi-weekly meetings with project leader and student assistant, monthly meetings with partners
  • Research:
    • Development of use cases/user stories and user requirements
      • conduct a series of structured interviews with researchers with various disciplinary backgrounds (including but not limited to oral historians, anthropologists, sociologists), museum staff (curators) and community archives (including volunteers)
    • Analysis and comparison of existing protocols for these user groups (DANS, CLARIAH, Sprekende Geschiedenis, NDE), including GDPR and informed consent
    • Author final report and advice on oral history protocols in Dutch
    • Co-author conference paper and peer-reviewed article
  • Community support:
    • Assist interview candidates and other research participants in preparing their oral history data and depositing at DANS
    • Develop input for online tutorials in collaboration with partners and designer

The ideal candidate:

  • Has affinity with the social sciences and humanities
  • Is familiar with the specificities of interview and speech data in general, and oral history data in particular
  • Has experience with action-based research
  • Is prepared to work with partners in the field of heritage, in particular museums (e.g. MuseumFabriek Enschede, Haags Historisch Museum, Zeeuws Museum) and community archives (e.g. Dig It Up, Moslim Archief)
  • Can conduct a significant part (interviewing, writing) of the research in Dutch
