The Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) is already in place in the European Union. This piece of regulation is a landmark and a unique law worldwide. Its recent approval and its application, since past February, is accompanied by many questions regarding its impact on people’s daily life. As well as its effectiveness in balancing innovation and safety in all spheres of society, including research. To respond to some of the pressing questions that accompany the implementation of this pioneering regulation, the Network Institute (NI) has organized an Informative Session on the AI Act.

  • When: April 25th, 3pm-5pm after which there will be drinks and networking
  • Where: at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Theater 7-NU-4C11)
  • Register for free here

The Informative Session on the AI Act organized by the NI will bring together policymakers at the forefront of the elaboration of this pioneering legislation. As well as experts and researchers from different fields (including law and computing science among others), who will illustrate and discuss the potential effects of the new legal framework. Gabriele Mazzini from the European Commission and team leader of the AI Act, will walk us through the details of the new legislation. He will specifically discuss its future-proof approach, considering the fact that AI is a fast-evolving technology. Thereafter, Gemma Newlands, researcher at the Oxford Internet Institute and organizational sociologist, will discuss the impact of AI technology on work and organizations, focusing on issues of surveillance and visibility. The two interventions will be followed by a panel of experts and VU researchers (see details in the poster below) who will enhance the proposed debate from their own fields of expertise.

The event is open and the organizers look forward to meeting you there to listen to your own questions regarding the AI Act and get to know your experience in the field too. For this, the panel will be followed by a networking session accompanied by drinks.
