Have you ever wondered how your mental health could be assessed using information from your social media activity and wearable devices? Traditional psychiatry has long grappled with the absence of objective markers for mental health conditions. The reliance on subjective assessments and self-reported data has left clinicians and researchers yearning for more precise tools. Enter digital phenotyping (DP), a novel approach that seeks to harness the power of digital data to revolutionize mental health diagnosis and treatment. DP seeks to identify ‘digital biomarkers’ that could serve as early indicators of mental health conditions. However, DP also risks oversimplifying complex human experiences. How do we establish reliability and accuracy against traditional diagnostic criteria? How do we ensure that individuals’ data remains confidential and secure and don’t perpetuate biases?
