Research Lunch – May 2025

The Network Institute would like to invite you to the next Research Lunch, organised to facilitate exchange among researchers at the VU across faculties and disciplines.

We will have the pleasure to host Yarin Eski, who will talk about Cybercrime in Outer Space: On space crime, digitalization and empirical space criminology.

“It is becoming clear that humanity is expanding more and more its presence beyond Earth, where crime and justice will inevitably follow. The rise of commercial space travel, satellite networks, and digital infrastructures introduces new challenges for criminology, governance, and law enforcement. But what is space crime? How does digitalization, i.a. cybercrime play a role? Also, who investigates cybercrime in orbit? How do we regulate misconduct on Mars, for example? And, of course, how to research all of this space criminologically?

To answer these questions, and to present some more questions, I will introduce the emerging field of space criminology in relation to dilemmas of crime beyond Earth: from hacking satellites to corporate control over space colonies, I will highlight a couple of key issues and hopefully will discover some new ones.”

We hope to see many of you there! As always, a vegetarian lunch will be included.
