At the moment (Sept 2025) Nebula is still in its testing phase. This means that we are testing the best software, hardware and security that will benefit you as researcher the best.
Security
Nebula is currently running on one or more high-end gaming machine which are all physically located in our Tech Labs on the VU Campus.
As very few people have physical access to our Tech Labs the Nebula computers have a very low physical exposure.
The Nebula computers are running on a separate VLAN within the VU network which is located in the DMZ of the VU network. This allows for easy reachability while at the same time still profit from security measures implemented by the VU and SURF.
User administration is currently restricted to 3 accounts. User accounts are always created based on research projects and are by definition temporary. User accounts are protected by standard user-password authentication.
At this moment (Sept 2025) we are looking into increasing the security measures while at the same time keeping access and maintenance as friendly as possible.
Data security
The Network Institute does not retain the data generated by using Nebula after the research project is finished. All user data and accounts will be permanently deleted after the research project is closed.
At this moment (Sept 2025) there is no backup of Nebula or of any of the data generated by users.
