Research Lunch: Can the EU Digital Markets Act Guide Ethical Platform Design?

We would like to invite you to a talk on October 21st by our visiting researcher Fabian Stiehle: Can the EU Digital Markets Act Guide Ethical Platform Design?

Abstract:The early internet promised a world of openness and shared knowledge. Today, this vision has given way to a handful of dominant platforms that control vast amounts of data. Platforms are criticised for undermining fundamental societal values and even for contributing to the erosion of our democratic norms. But how can we do better? This research explores this question from a system design perspective, using recent EU regulation as a reference frame. We will explore (i) What are the values and goals of the EU Digital Markets Act? (ii) How can these values and resulting obligations guide actionable strategies for ethical platform design? As such research is inherently interdisciplinary, we invite all interested to discuss this issue.
